Arik McGathey was born and raised in Crete, IL, about 40 minutes south of Chicago. There he attended Lutheran grade school and Illinois Lutheran High School. While there he was active in sports, band and choir, and played guitar with the praise band at Trinity in Crete.  After high school, Arik headed up to Milwaukee to attend Wisconsin Lutheran College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music theory and composition. This is where he met his wife, Lisa McGathey (Johnston).  Lisa went to St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Lecanto, FL before trading beach for dairyland to attend Luther Preparatory School in Watertown, WI followed by WLC. She graduated with a major in business and psychology while working at a preschool and child care.  Arik and Lisa were married on December 30, 2012. After a year and a half of married life in Milwaukee, the couple decided to spend six months volunteering at a home for single mothers in Aurora, CO. During those six months, the Colorado bug bit. At the end of the six months, the McGatheys moved up to Arvada.

When the call came for Arik to become the music coordinator at Carbon Valley, he was reluctant. Luckily, Pastor Tim’s passion (and persistence) helped Arik and Lisa to realize the amazing opportunity to help a new church reach a new community with God’s message of salvation. After a year of membership at Carbon Valley, Arik has been led to now take on a more permanent role, coordinating the music as well as the youth ministry. Arik and Lisa, along with their recent addition Eloise, have been deeply blessed to be a part of Carbon Valley and look forward to sharing it with you soon.
